Heading South - Canada

We decided to take a great American road trip, touring all the climbing areas we could over the course of a summer. This is the beginning, heading down through Canada.

  • Our trusty '94 Jeep Cherokee in Anchorage just before leaving. The rear shocks were bottomed out completely until we got to Seattle and ditched our cold weather gear.
  • As we crossed the Tanana River on our first day, I mentioned how I always wanted to rig a highline on a bridge like this. Kelsey looked at me and said "Well I've always wanted to just climb one." So to set the spirit for the road trip, we pulled over and made our way to the top.
  • The first night on the road we camped just across the border in Canada. We pulled off the road on a little path into the woods and found a great site by a riverbed with nobody else around.
  • Our staple for the road was peanut butter and chocolate chips. It's quick, it's easy, and it tastes great as well!
  • Canada has 250 buffalo, and they all seem to line the side of the highway.
  • Our only real stop on the way through Canada was at Liard River Hot Springs, where we ate lunch and headed to the springs.
  • A chilly rain was falling as we changed into our shorts, making the water all that much more inviting.
  • Kelsey takes a dive into the deep upper pool at Liard. We had the whole pool to ourselves.
  • This guy pulled over to let us pass, slid several hundred feet down a pullout, jackknifed so far his trailer busted out his truck window, and stopped literally right on the edge of a steep drop into a lake.
  • We offered what we could to try to patch up his window, but with a wet snow falling, it probably didn't help too much.
  • Breakfast at a rest stop somewhere in Canada.
  • Kelsey plays around at a pulloff somewhere near Lillouette, BC.
  • We spotted this log jam from the highway, and having never seen one like this, we stopped. Of course we know it's dangerous... perhaps that's WHY we had to try to cross the river on the floating logs.
  • Brandywine Falls, somewhere in Canada.
