Moab, UT

We spent a whole week in Moab, where we met up with a bunch of photographers at the Smugmug shootout. We took a small portion of them out for some climbing and high-angle photography, as well as a rope jump and all-around good times.

  • Our week in Moab begins with us camping at a free climber's campground below Castleton Tower, one of our targets for this trip.
  • One of our primary reasons for visiting Moab was to meet up with users of smugmug.com in the annual Smugmug Shootout and teach interested ones how to climb and use ropes to gain altitude in their photography. To prepare, we visited a wall called the Ice Cream Parlor and climbed the routes there to get a feel for whether they'd be good to bring the group to. Here, Richard works his way up one of the routes on the wall.
  • Tracy follows an obvious line up a crack without much difficulty.
  • Tracy works her way higher up just one of the massive and awe-inspiring walls of Moab.
  • Kelsey places pieces in a deep flaring crack as he climbs higher.
  • A 5.6 doesn't present much difficulty for Kelsey as he fiddles with protection with both hands, preparing to place it.
  • Jess Young follows Kelsey up this 5.6, cleaning and examining his placements.
  • Eroded sandstone features are often interesting to examine.
  • Kelsey slips his hands into the thin jams of this 5.8 crack.
  • Arches National Park's Owl Rock formation stands in the sunlight as a tiny Kelsey works his way up a crack on the right side.
  • Kelsey tops out on the bulbous summit of Owl Rock.
  • Midday sun silhouettes Kelsey Gray atop Owl Rock in Arches National Park.
  • Photographing the photographer: Kelsey Gray shoots the rest of the party following us up Owl Rock.
  • The whole road trip group on the summit of Owl Rock in Arches National Park.
  • Sunshine backlights Jess Young and Richard Harrop at Turret Arch.
  • Turret Arch towers over spectators enjoying the beautiful scenery of Arches National Park.
  • A gnarled juniper reaches a dead arm to the sky amid the bright red rocks of Moab.
  • Kelsey pulls off a handstand inside Double Arch under a clear blue sky.
  • Water streaks create beautiful art on the sandstone walls of Arches National Park.
  • Delicate Arch frames the nearby mountains just before sunset.
