A Week In Oregon

With a free plane ride dropped in our laps, Tracy and I took off to visit the family, see some sights, and climb some rocks in Oregon for a week. In this album are photos from our flight down, a visit to the beach at Indian Cove, the Portland Zoo, and Smith Rock State Park.

• A captive Golden Eagle flies for audiences at the Portland Zoo.
• A captive turkey vulture flies for audiences at the Portland Zoo.
• A captive Bald Eagle flies for audiences at the Portland Zoo.
• Crooked River reflects a portion of Smith Rock state park in its slow moving summer flow.
• The Crooked River turns a corner with several massive abutments of Smith Rock looming above as the sun goes down.
• Smith Rock State Park's Monkey Face Tower looms high over the valley as the sun goes down. We started climbing it shortly after, rappelling down sometime near midnight in the pitch-black darkness.
• Tracy's headlamp leaves a trail against the black wall of the Monkey Face Tower in Smith Rock as she rappels back to the base. I must confess I blew this shot, mistakenly thinking my camera had died and picking it up before I got the exposure I wanted of the sky and stars above. I cried a little.
• A black widow feasts on a midnight snack alongside the trail, disturbed by our interest.
• A black widow feasts on a midnight snack alongside the trail, disturbed by our interest.
• A black widow feasts on a midnight snack next to its egg sack alongside the trail, disturbed by our interest and curiosity.
• The creatures of midnight are a bit more exposed than they are during the day. Crickets like this one were all over the trail on our hike back to the tent.
• Scorpions move out into the trail after dark, creeping around and generally just sitting there upon our approach.
• A large and slightly intimidating spider crouches warily in the trail, startled by our presence.
• Stars streak the sky for ten minutes over the Crooked River.
• Smith Rock rises high over the Crooked River, with stars rising forever higher above.
• Asterisk Pass at Smith Rock State Park sits bathed in bright moonlight during a ten minute exposure.
• Skies streaked with stars over Smith Rock State Park.
• Tracy follows me up the second pitch of Bunny Ears 5.7 at Smith.
• Great climbing leads Tracy to the anchor on the second pitch of Bunny Ears 5.7.
• Monstrous looming rocks stand unimpressed as a pair of climbers move up the shoulder ever closer to the summit.
