Hike to Reed Valley

With Archangel Road not yet open for the summer, we brought our friend Andrew up the Reed Lakes trail about four and a half miles from the parking lot on Hatcher Pass Road. Andrew repeatedly reminded us that he was a city boy, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience even with the workout.

  • Andrew and Tracy approach along the Reed Lakes trail.
  • An old wooden culvert leftover from the mining days in Hatcher Pass starts to show the wear, although it still channels water effectively.
  • Local beavers have presented a problem or two along this trail, but a little water on the feet isn't too bad here.
  • Coming from Wisconsin, the Alaska scenery is enormously impressive to Andrew. He tries to take it all in with his camera.
  • He may be a big man, but that's an even bigger boulder.
  • An immature bald eagle soars past out of reach of the lens on my small point-and-shoot.
  • A 180 degree stitched panorama of the portion of trail just before Lower Reed Lake. I love Alaska for so many places like this.

  • Andrew fills his camera's spare memory cards to the brim with photos of the scenery.
