ManilaPhilippines2010

  • How do you count lives lost?
  • Here and there among the fallen is one remembered under a Star of David rather than a cross.
  • Markers of remembrance at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.
  • Happy locals work at loading a dumptruck with huge bags of recyclables.
  • It seems everybody we pass by on the street is happy to have their picture taken, many of them stopping us and asking to be photographed.
  • These two men live on this street corner, and waved us over to take a photo of them.
  • One of many common local vehicles, the man-powered tricycles are heavily used in the Manila area.
  • A jeepney driver rests away the evening light in the back of his rig.
  • The children love to be photographed as we walk along the city streets.
  • A bit of computer repair takes place outside the front door of this residence.
  • Our jeepney driver eyes the traffic ahead, watching for his opening to squeeze through.
  • A momentary halt at a traffic light offers a view of the jeepney behind us out the door of our own rig.
  • The jeepneys in the Philippines are well known for their cramped quarters, often filling with riders until the only room left is hanging off the back.
  • Our travels on this morning brought us to the top of a hill referred to locally as a mountain, in the town of Antipolo. Parking the rig, we headed off down the alleyways between the homes.
  • Bro. Alex tells me that this land is all owned by the government. The people living here are squatters, and should the land ever be chosen for development, hundreds of poor families will simply be displaced. This is common all over the region.
  • Equipment is set up to play videos for the locals who have come to see what we're all about.
  • Lack of money does not mean lack of possessions for these people, it simply requires utilizing a level of ingenuity left untouched by the world's richer population.
  • Our food is prepared over a small coal stove while we show a small presentation telling the people why we're here.
  • Local shoes leave the feet entirely exposed to the elements, which adds a certain character you'd never see inside a sock.
  • The reason we came to this small poor mountaintop is to distribute medicines to people who otherwise would not be able to afford any.
