This one was pretty involved. I feel like it could have been done a bit better with some proper consideration to a setting a scene in the background, but ain't nobody got time for that!
To start with, I shot a portrait using flat light by standing close to my five-foot softbox against a white background. I processed that to turn it to a two-tone black and white, and then had that printed at a local shop because I don't own a printer. Later I was able to find some black sand and a set of construction miniatures, and then there was an hour or so of carefully pouring and aligning sand over the print and placing the crew. Sand is a medium I've never worked with and it's a bit delicate! After that I made a bit of separation by placing the scene a short distance from the wall and made a slightly soft "sun" using a 7" reflector.
In the end, it could have been done better with more involvement, but I think it's still pretty sweet!
