This project started out with an idea to gift a jewelry piece as a birthday present. Remembering an Alaskan ivory carver who had shared some photos of fossilized mammoth ivory on a message board I frequent, I headed to the local ivory dealer he had mentioned to pick some up with the idea of doing a carving and some scrimshaw. I had never done any sort of jewelry before, and had never worked with ivory, so this idea intrigued me. I wound up picking out the piece pictured here for a reasonable price, and after getting home, started figuring out how to work with this stuff. Shown here is the piece I sawed off for this project, alongside the raw remnants of the chunk.

  • After a lot of learning, quite a bit of time, and some tool acquisition, I wound up with the shape cut out, sanded down, and polished. Most of this work was done with a dremel tool, making sure to keep the piece cool while carving, and then finishing the sanding with regular sandpaper before polishing with a felt wheel on the dremel again.
  • The final polished piece, prior to starting on the wire wrapping stage.
  • To finish this piece I got some wire of both copper and sterling silver, and built my concept using copper a few times to perfect it before making the final piece with the silver wire. The pendant is hung on a sterling silver chain as well. The final piece came out pretty awesome, and I'm quite happy with it!
