Sandstone Necklace

This piece started on an impulse while wandering a desert canyon shortly before I was going to need to have a birthday present to give to someone I care about. I found a soft piece of sandstone in the desert to start with, from a spot near where this photo was shot.

  • Using a larger piece of sandstone I ground down the small piece until I had a nicely shaped necklace pendant, shown here. The white balance on this shot shows the colors more genuinely than the other two photos, which were shot on my phone.
  • Using a couple pieces of leather and a few fancy knots, I wrapped the pendant and hung it from a thicker leather band, to which I fastened clasps finished up with some nice leather wrapping as well. In the end this is a more simple and primitive piece than others I have made, but I really like the result.
